Badaguan Scenic Area (Eight Passes)

Set along the coast southeast of Qingdao, the Badaguan Scenic Area (Eight Passes) is a historic neighborhood with a colonial past. More than 200 buildings and villas representing the architectural styles of more than 20 different countries can be found here, amid charming tree- and flower-lined streets and several beaches.
The basics
Originally comprising eight avenues named after eight strategic passes in China, the area has since expanded to 10 avenues. Each avenue features different trees and flowers, along with an assortment of scenic villas with courtyards. Badaguan Scenic Area is included in many Qingdao Sightseeing tours, along with other popular attractions such as the Tsingtao Brewery, Zhanqiao Pier, and Xiaoyushan Park. Private tours let you fully customize your itinerary. Day-trip tours from Jinan and Beijing by bullet train are also available.

Badaguan is a must-see for history and architecture fans.
It’s free to access the scenic area, but there is a small fee for Hua Shi Villa.
This is a great place to take photos, especially when different flowers are in bloom or when the leaves change colors in the fall.
There are a few restaurants and cafés in the area.
How to get there
The Badaguan Scenic Area is located in the Shinan District, southeast of Qingdao. You can take a taxi or Metro Line 3 to Zhongshan Gongyuan. Sightseeing bus 11 also stops here, along with bus numbers 26, 31, 304, 223, 316, and 501 (to Wushengguan Road Station). Many sightseeing tours also include this area on their itinerary.
When to get there
Badaguan can be visited at any time, with many different trees and flowers blooming during different seasons, including peach trees in the spring, myrtle flowers in the summer, and maple trees in the fall. Visit in the summer to enjoy the nearby beaches. The area can be especially busy over the week-long national holidays in May and October
Area highlights
Hua Shi Villa is one of the top highlights in the area, and offers tours of its interior. The castle-like structure features Greek, Roman, and Gothic architectural styles, and was later converted to a luxury hotel. Princess Villa, another standout, features a Danish architectural style. Beach # 2 is also a popular destination, though it’s only open over the summer.
