Balti Jaam Market

Kopli 1, Tallinn, Estonia, 10412

Stalls of fresh produce and handicrafts stand alongside a food court offering international dishes at Tallinn’s Balti Jaam Market. Across from the city’s train station, the market is housed in a modern angular structure, with both indoor and outdoor communal areas. Street art and unusual features, such as a converted tram, make it a vibrant space that’s not just for shoppers.

The basics

Because the Balti Jaam Market provides such a wide range of food options, it’s often included as a stop on Tallinn food tours. However, you can often also see it on walking and cycling tours that highlight Tallinn’s creative side and areas beyond the old town.

For a simple walk among the stalls, 30 minutes is plenty, but you can easily spend more time here if you sit down at a café or in the food court. After eating your way through the market, walk over to the Telliskivi Creative City to continue exploring Tallinn’s alternative culture.

Things to know before you go

  • Besides stalls selling fresh produce, there is also a supermarket in the basement for regular shopping needs.

  • Balti Jaam Market is wheelchair accessible, with elevators and escalators providing access internally, and external ramps connecting to the upper floor.

  • Pets are allowed inside the market.

  • An underground parking lot under the market is available for paid parking.

  • Free Wi-Fi and restrooms are available for visitors.

How to get there

Balti Jaam Market, just north of Tallinn’s train station and the Telliskivi Creative Hub, is a 10-minute walk from the center of Tallinn Old Town. When coming from other parts of the city, ride the #1, #2, or #5 tram to the Balti Jaam stop by the market’s main entrance, or take one of the many bus routes that stop outside the train station.

When to get there

The doors to Balti Jaam Market are open daily from morning to early evening year-round, but kiosks, shops, and restaurants generally keep their own hours. While the food court inside closes when the market closes, restaurants with external access stay open later. The market is a good option for lunch or an early dinner, but otherwise, the best time to visit is whenever suits you.

Where to find Estonian food at the market

Aside from fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally, much of the food at the Balti Jaam Market is international, from Italian to Uzbeki and Taiwanese. Visitors looking for Estonian food should head to the various bakeries on-site and pick up pirukas—an empanada-like stuffed pastry, moonirullid—poppy seed rolls, and kaneelikuklid—cinnamon rolls.
