Bang Rak
Bang Rak, Bangkok, Thailand, 10500
Perched on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Bang Rak is a bustling neighborhood alive with sights, smells, and sounds. Most famous for its street food, sleek shopping malls, high-rise hotels, and Hindu and Buddhist temples, the area encapsulates all of Bangkok’s best bits.
The basics
Home to the Bangkok Folk Museum (also known as the Bangkokian Museum) and Wat Hua Lamphong and Sri Maha Mariamman temples, Bang Rak is a staple of comprehensive Bangkok sightseeing tours; you can see these top Bangkok attractions on foot, by air-conditioned vehicle, or in a more traditional motorized tuk-tuk.
The area between the Saphan Taksin BTS Skytrain station and the junction of Charoen Krung and Silom roads boasts a number of hawker food stalls serving local specialities such as som tum (papaya salad) and mango sticky rice—it’s commonly featured on food tours that help you overcome the language barrier.
Things to know before you go
Bang Rak is a must-visit spot if you want to sample the city’s famed street food and see impressive high-rises.
The sidewalks in Bang Rak are quite narrow and can be uneven—it's not impossible to navigate in a wheelchair, but exploring in a vehicle may be easier.
If you’re planning to visit Sri Maha Mariamman temple, you’ll need to dress appropriately. Men are required to wear long pants and shirts with sleeves, while women must cover their shoulders and knees; saris are available to rent at the front.
How to get there
Bang Rak is served by both the Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) and Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT). Skytrain stations include Sala Daeng, Chong Nonsi, Surasak, and Saphan Taksin. Metro stations include Lumphini, Silom, and Samyan. You can also get to Bang Rak by river via the Chao Phraya Express Boat.
When to get there
Though Bangkok is hot and humid throughout the year, the coolest months are November through February, which make for more comfortable exploration. Songkran, or Thai New Year, lands on April 13, though the holiday period runs through the 15th; it is celebrated every year with a giant water fight, during which locals brandish toy super soakers.
Panoramic vistas in Bang Rak
Bang Rak is famous for its ample skyscrapers, which afford panoramic views of Thailand’s sprawling capital city. King Power Mahanakhon is Thailand’s tallest tower, and boasts a 360-degree observation deck with a glass floor, while the Sky Bar at the top of Lebua at State Tower is a great place to kick back with a cocktail and watch the sunset.
