Banganga Tank (Banganga Talav)

Teen Batti, Malabar Hill, Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400006

Part of the Walkeshwar Temple Complex in Mumbai, Banganga Tank collects water from a freshwater spring. The earliest mention of this water source is in the Ramayana, a sacred Hindu text: legend has it that the spring was created when Rama asked his brother Lakshman for water and Lakshman shot an arrow into the ground, causing water to flow.

The basics

Some believe that the spring here comes from a tributary of the Ganges River (the name Banganga translates as ‘arrow Ganges’). As a result, the tank draws spiritual pilgrims wanting to bathe in its sacred waters, though the non-devout are also welcome to spend time at the tank. It’s one of Mumbai’s holiest sites and features on both spirituality-themed tours of the city and more general South Mumbai sightseeing tours.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission to the tank is free.
  • Be prepared to remove your footwear before descending to the edge of the tank.
  • Be mindful of pilgrims bathing in the tank and do not take photos of anyone while bathing, especially women.
  • Banganga Tank is not wheelchair-accessible.

How to get there

Banganga Tank is in the Malabar Hill area of South Mumbai, about a 20-minute drive from the Gateway of India and a 10-minute drive from Chowpatty Beach. The nearest bus stop is at the Walkeshwar Bus Depot, a 5-minute walk away, but it's much quicker to hail a metered taxi or autorickshaw.

When to get there

Banganga Tank is open every day of the week and is best visited early in the morning or evening, when there’s less heat and humidity. For a special treat, visit in January, when the 2-day Banganga Festival takes place, which features classical music performances from artists from across the country.

Exploring Malabar Hill

Banganga is situated in the sophisticated Malabar Hill neighborhood, so it's worth sticking around to wander the neighborhood after your visit to the tank. You'll find plenty of impressive residences and a handful of clothing boutiques, as well as the Hanging Gardens (Ferozeshah Mehta), a beautifully manicured garden with views of the Arabian Sea.
