POINT OF INTEREST

Barranco de las Peñitas

Fuerteventura, Spain

Barranco de Las Penitas showcases the best of Fuerteventura’s ancient volcanic landscapes. An underground river flows beneath this dramatic ravine and surfaces in a small lake, creating a green oasis amid the barren terracotta desert. You can hike to a lookout point that offers panoramic views of the unique topography.

The basics

A 2-mile (3.5-kilometer) out-and-back trail reveals the rugged landscapes of Barranco de Las Penitas—also known as Las Penitas Canyon—in all of its arid glory; the trail is considered easy, though there are steep and rocky sections that require some scrabbling. Arco de las Penitas, an arched rock formation that offers great views of the valley, is considered a highlight of the route. Plenty of tours visit Barranco de Las Penitas on guided hikes, often in combination with a visit to Ajuy Caves, thought to be the oldest rock formations in the Canary Islands.

Things to know before you go

  • Look out for the small and unassuming Ermita de la Peña chapel nestled among the reddish rocks.

  • Make sure you wear sturdy shoes suitable for the uneven terrain of the canyon.

  • There’s very little shade on this hike, so bring ample water, sun protection, and a hat.

How to get there

Barranco de Las Penitas is on the western side of Fuerteventura. From the international airport, 50 minutes by car via the FV-413 and FV-30 roads. If driving, there is a parking area located at Camino San Sebastián/Camino Puerto de la Peña. You can also take the Alsa L2 or L16 buses and get off at the Vega de Rio Palmas stop.

When to get there

If visiting in Fuerteventura’s summer months—July to September—only attempt the trek either early in the morning or once the sun has peaked after 2pm, as the route offers little shade. The shoulder months of April, June or October can be lovely for a visit, when the climate is still pleasant and warm. Sunset tends to bathe the area with an ethereal glow, so is a great time for photography buffs.

What to do in the village of Ajuy

Ajuy isn’t just home to the ancient Ajuy Caves that date back more than 100 million years, the small fishing village is the perfect place to escape the crowds and soak up the island’s more authentic side. It boasts several excellent seafood restaurants that serve freshly caught fish with a Spanish twist.
