Basílica de Santa María de la Victoria

Plaza Santuario, Malaga, Andalucia, 29013

The Basílica de Santa María de la Victoria is located at the edge of Malaga Old Town. It is one of the city’s oldest churches and, some say, the most beautiful in all of Andalucia. Don’t be fooled by its plain exterior: Inside, a baroque whirl of chapels, sculptures, religious artifacts, and an ornate crypt await.

The basics

Rising from Malaga’s Plaza del Santuario, the 17th-century Basílica de Santa María is often overlooked by travelers, but more than worth visiting for its stunning interior. Highlights include its Santa María La Victoria chapel, with its 15th-century statue of the Virgin, an ornate dressing-room tower topped by a white-and-gold dome, a 17th-century altarpiece, and a treasure-filled exhibition room.

Several Malaga sightseeing tours, shore excursions, and private guided walks showcase the church, teaming it with other landmarks and tapas tastings. Self-guided city audio tours and hop-on hop-off bus routes also feature the basílica, enabling you to explore it at your own pace. If you’re here on your own, ask about audio guides or in-house tours, which sometimes are available.

Things to know before you go

  • The basílica is a must for history, art, religion, and architecture enthusiasts.

  • The basilica welcomes visitors; the crypt and exhibition room may be closed for restoration.

  • Entry to the basilica is usually free, but there may be a small admission fee to other areas.

  • Visitors should avoid wearing shorts and sleeveless tops out of respect for local customs.

How to get there

The basilica is in Malaga’s La Victoria district, about a 12-minute walk from Plaza de la Merced in the Old Town. Alternatively, catch one of the frequent #1 or #C2 buses that run from Alameda Principal and the Plaza de la Merced to Fernando el Católico, a few steps from the church. If you’re driving, parking in the surrounding streets is relatively easy, and there’s a payable lot at the nearby Pascual Hospital.

When to get there

The basilica is typically open daily, from early morning to afternoon and early to mid evening. Times vary, so check with the church beforehand. The crypt and exhibition room, if open to the public, may have different opening times. Mass is usually held at 9am and 7:30pm/8pm Monday–Saturday, and 10am, 11am, and 7:30pm/8pm on Sundays, so avoid these services if you want a quiet visit.

Must-sees at the Basílica de Santa María de la Victoria

Completed in 1700, the basilica follows a classic Latin-cross design, with small balconies and intricate plasterwork decorating the central nave to spectacular effect. If the crypt or exhibition room are open, don’t miss them—the crypt boasts extraordinary white plaster figures of skeletons that seem to pop off the dramatic black walls.
