Basilique Collégiale Notre-Dame

Pl. du Général Leclerc, Beaune, France, 21200

Known for its imposing Cluniac-style architecture, the 13th-century Collegiate Basilica of Notre Dame is one of Beaune’s most striking landmarks. Widely regarded among Burgundy’s most beautiful churches, it’s notable for its Renaissance-era bell tower, Gothic renovations, and series of 16th-century tapestries.

The basics

Most walking and sightseeing tours of Beaune include a stop to admire the Collegiate Basilica of Notre Dame, often in combination with nearby sights such as the Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu). Inside the basilica, you can admire the remains of 15th-century murals, a series of colorful 19th-century stained-glass windows, and the original 13th-century cloister. It’s most renowned for its collection of medieval tapestries, which are on display in the choir and depict the life of the Virgin Mary.

Things to know before you go

  • The basilica and the collegiate choir, home to the tapestries, are free to visit.

  • Guided tours are available for a small fee; reservations are required.

  • The basilica is mostly accessible for visitors using wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The Collegiate Basilica of Notre Dame is located on Place Général Leclerc in the heart of Beaune’s Old Town. It’s easy to reach while strolling around the Old Town, and buses also stop outside the Hospices de Beaune, just a 2-minute walk away.

When to get there

The church is open to visitors daily, and regular services are held throughout the year. The tapestries can be viewed from mid-May through October at select times—typically weekday and Sunday afternoons only.

Landmarks of Beaune’s Old Town

Beaune is the gateway to the Côte d’Or and Côte de Beaune wineries, but is also known for its walled Old Town, a place to wander among picturesque cobblestone streets and half-timbered buildings. Memorable landmarks include the 15th-century Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu) with its extravagant multi-colored roof tiles, the old ramparts and Saint-Nicolas gate, and the castle-like Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne, now home to the Musée du Vin.
