Basseterre
Basseterre, St. Kitts
St. Kitt’s capital city Basseterre lies on the southern coast of the island in a small protected harbor and is one of the Eastern Caribbean’s oldest towns. After centuries of French and British colonial rule, the city has taken on a delightful mix of European architecture and culture and laidback island lifestyle.
The Basics
As the cultural and commercial center of the Federation, Basseterre has interesting heritage sites and monuments alongside craft markets, breweries, and pubs. Explore both sides of the capital—the Circus, which is geared towards tourists, and Independence Square, which contains the city’s important historic buildings such as St. George's Anglican Church, the National Museum, and Fort Thomas. From Basseterre, take a luxury catamaran cruise at sunset. As the sun sets below the horizon, head back to shore, relaxed and ready to enjoy the rest of your island evening on St Kitts.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Basseterre is an ideal spot for history lovers and those who like to experience local culture.
- Wear comfortable shoes since the best way to get around is on foot.
- Remember sun protection and insect repellent.
- Basseterre is easily accessible for wheelchair users, however, it is recommended to check in advance if locations have proper facilities.
- Bring extra cash (local currency and U.S. dollars are accepted), since credit cards are not universally accepted.
How to Get There
Basseterre is the capital of St. Kitts, and can be reached by various means of transport. You can reach the city by plane, or by ferry from neighboring Nevis Island. Large cruise ships stop at the Basseterre port. From there, walk or take a bus to the city center.
When to Get There
Basseterre has a consistent climate year-round, with pleasant temperatures and regular drizzles that keep vegetation lush and green. Beat the crowds by visiting in the spring and fall shoulder seasons. Festival lovers will want to come during June for the St. Kitts Music Festival or July for the Nevis Culturama, a vibrant festival highlighting the island’s culture and folklore. During hurricane season, June to November, there may be limited ships and ferries.
St. George's Anglican Church
The focal point of Basseterre, St. George's Anglican Church is the island’s largest church and a symbol of the island’s turbulent history. The original structure, built by the French in 1670, was burned down by the invading British colonists in 1706 who designed the church to look like a fortress, with a battlement-shaped tower, heavy volcanic rock walls, and a dark slate roof. Since then it’s suffered hurricanes, earthquakes, and more fires.
