Baths of Varius

Acarlar, Selçuk, Izmir, 35920

Featuring walls hewn from natural rock and a stunning 130-foot-long hallway adorned with 5th-century mosaics, the Baths of Varius underwent several renovations over the centuries to become the one-of-a-kind structure we see today. Boasting separate rooms for cold, warm, and hot water, private chambers for wealthy citizens of Ephesus, and possibly even a gymnasium, the baths covered an expansive area and provided a luxurious and functional hub for ancient Turkish society. A visit to the Baths of Varius is not only a memorable experience but also a valuable opportunity to learn about Ephesus’ unique history.

Practical Info

The Baths of Varius are a notable stop on most guided tours of Ephesus, one of Turkey’s top archaeological sites. Half-day excursions typically depart from Selçuk or Kusadasi, providing round-trip transportation, lunch, and guided tours of the baths. Many also include stops at nearby, notable attractions such as the Temple of Artemis and the House of the Virgin Mary.

Things to know before you go

The Baths of Varius are part of the larger Ephesus archaeological site and cannot be visited separately. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, as paths around the ruins are uneven and can be slippery. There is minimal shade, so bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Restrooms and refreshments are only available near the site entrance, not within the ancient city itself. Ephesus is partially accessible, but visitors with mobility concerns may find some areas (including the baths) challenging to navigate.

How to get there

The most common way to reach Ephesus is by air, with İzmir Adnan Menderes International Airport being the closest air facility to the ruins. From the airport, travelers can take a taxi, bus, or train to get to Selcuk. From Selçuk, it’s just a 5-minute drive by taxi to the ruins. Alternatively, book a guided tour that departs from Selçuk or Kusadasi to eliminate the need for extra planning on your part.

When to get there

While the city is open to visitors year-round, there are certain times of the year that are better suited for a trip. The spring months of April and May are ideal for those seeking mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Meanwhile, the fall months of September and October provide a similar experience with the added bonus of beautiful autumn foliage.

An important part of Roman society

The Baths of Varius are one of four bath complexes in Ephesus. Situated at the entrance to Upper Ephesus at the southern end of the complex, the baths served an important role in Roman civilization. First erected so that visitors could wash and disinfect before entering, they also served as a social meeting place and relaxation destination.
