Batoka Gorge
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
The incredible power of Victoria Falls is on full display in Batoka Gorge–the waters surge and eddy to create thrilling opportunities for white-water rafting and stunning scenery for hikers. The Zambezi River created the gorge, which runs along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, providing an environment bursting with flora and fauna.
The basics
Beginning at the Falls, the gorge runs 75 miles downstream with plenty of spots for hikers, birdwatchers, and white-water rafters to explore. Tours often depart from the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and offer the chance to take on rapids up to Class V. For the nature enthusiasts, you can take on the challenging hike to the Boiling Pot swimming hole.
Things to know before you go
Many adventure activities related to the gorge have an age limit—be sure to check with your tour providers if you’re bringing children.
Any hikes along the gorge require sturdy footwear with good grip, as the rocks can get slippery from the spray.
Bring sunscreen and water, as activities in the gorge tend to be remote.
Ensure your camera and phone are waterproof, or bring a waterproof bag to protect them from spray.
How to get there
Batoka Gorge begins at the base of Victoria Falls and continues downstream—most activities require a guided tour or experience. Luckily, Zimbabwe and Zambia have access to the gorge, so you can approach it from either side.
When to get there
For those interested in rafting trips, time your visit to your experience level. The low-water season runs from August and December and sees the rapids at their most intense, with plenty of Class V rapids. During the high-water months of January and February, and June and July, several upstream rapids are impassable, so trips focus on the calmer downstream routes. From April to June, the water tends to be too high for rafting.
Batoka Gorge bungee jumping
If you’re still craving an adrenaline rush after taking on the white-water rapids, step it up with a bungee jumping experience off the Victoria Falls Bridge. The bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia offers stunning views as the water thunders through the gorge far below—take the plunge and experience the adventure of a lifetime.
