Bayir Village

Bayir Village, Marmaris, Muğla, 48700

Located in the Bozburun Peninsula in southwestern Turkey, Bayir is a historic village that dates back to 200 BC. The town was built on the ruins of an ancient city, Syrna, with the mosque sitting on top of the temple of Asklepios, the Greek god of health. History buffs can admire the acropolis, pieces of the old city walls, some gravestones, and the remains of several other structures.

The basics

Bayir Village is often included on tours that depart from Marmaris and reveal parts of the peninsula that are difficult to reach. Bayir’s elevation provides panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, while the village’s most famous natural landmark is undoubtedly the 2,300-year-old plane tree. In addition to Bayir, sightseeing excursions include visits to Jesus Beach, also known as Kizkumu Beach, and Turgut Village, renowned for its Muslim cultural landmarks.

How to get there

The closest airport to Bayir Village is Dalaman Airport, which is an approximately 2-hour drive from the village. If you’re looking to take a day trip from the center of Marmaris, it takes around 45 minutes to reach it by car via the Turunç Yolu road.

Things to know before you go

  • Bayir Village is famous for producing pine honey; you can buy local honey in town.

  • There are a few boutique hotels in the village, but space is limited so be sure to book in advance, especially during peak season.

  • The restaurants in the village offer traditional Turkish cuisine, but most of their menus aren’t in English. Be sure to download a translation app on your phone before your trip.

When to get there

Turkey’s warm Mediterranean climate means Bayir Village has short, mild winters and long, hot summers. For fewer people, visit outside of July and August when the European school holidays take place. In June or October, you can expect better deals on hotels and less-crowded beaches.

Making a wish on the Old Plane Tree in Bayir

Dating back thousands of years, the plane tree is a focal point of the small village. You might see visitors walking around it and posing for photos beside it—encircling it on foot is supposed to prolong your life. The tree is also surrounded by tables, which provide a shady spot to enjoy the local specialty of ayrana, a Turkish yogurt drink.
