Beaufort History Museum
The Beaufort History Museum is relatively new, having opened to the public in 2011, but the building is as historic as the museum’s exhibits. Constructed as an arsenal in 1795, it now charts Beaufort’s history from its roots as a Native American settlement to its Spanish colonial establishment and through the city’s significance in the Civil War and 20th-century industries.
The basics
Beaufort is one of the country's oldest towns, meaning the Beaufort History Museum has a lengthy legacy to cover. The main exhibit hall has documents, artifacts, and photographs covering the arrival of Native Americans and European colonists, leading to the present day. Pay special attention to the Civil War and Reconstruction era when Beaufort played a pivotal role.
Things to know before you go
- Temporary exhibits are on loan from other South Carolina cultural centers.

- Kids, museum members, and military personnel can enter for free.
How to get there
The Beaufort History Museum is located at 713 Craven Street in downtown Beaufort. It’s between Scott Street and the city’s main throughway, Carteret Street. Limited metered street parking is available, and a paid parking lot is across the street. If you are staying nearby, you will find it more convenient to walk to the museum from your hotel.
When to get there
The Beaufort History Museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays and may have limited staffing, so it’s a good idea to call before your visit. Most visitors spend an hour touring the museum. Check the schedule to see if a lecture series event is happening when you're there. The museum isn't usually crowded, so visit at your leisure when it's open.
See Beaufort’s history across town
Beaufort played a significant role in the Civil War, not only as the site where South Carolina planned its secession but also as where Union troops established a stronghold. Sites like the Secession House, the Beaufort National Cemetery, and the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park offer more insight into the city’s history.
