Bhadra Fort
Court Rd, Ahmedabad, India, 380001
When Ahmad Shah I founded Ahmedabad as the new capital of the Gujarat Sultanate in 1411, he built Bhadra Fort to fortify the city. The former site of a medieval court and a British colonial jail, the fort was fully renovated in 2014 and remains one of the modern city’s great landmarks—a squat fortress with Indo-Saracenic-style arches, balconies, and latticework.
The basics
Walk through Teen Darwaza, the historic gateway that served as the royal entrance from the east side of the fort, and you’ll quickly see the food vendors and market stalls pressing around Maidan-Shah, the former royal square. Along with the fort, this area is a common stop on walking tours and is easily accessible on foot. Inside the fort, where admission is free, you’ll find royal courts, gardens, and a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali.
Things to know before you go
Bhadra Fort is ideal for travelers interested in Gujarati architecture and history—or those seeking a break from the Maidan-Shah markets.
The fort has 14 towers and eight gates.
From the main gate, a staircase leads to the rooftop with views of the surrounding cityscape.
How to get there
Bhadra Fort lies in the very center of Ahmedabad, steps from the east side of the Sabarmati Riverfront. An entrance to the modern courthouse in the fort's government buildings lies on Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar Road off the west side of the fort, but your best bet for entering is from the east through the Teen Darwaja gate on Gandhi Road.
When to get there
The fort is generally open during daylight hours, while the adjacent markets can stay open well into the evening—visit before 8am to beat the market crowds and vendors. Generally, the best time to visit Ahmedabad is from October to March, when the weather is typically cool and dry. The fort often plays host to celebrations for public holidays, such as Independence Day in August and Republic Day in January.
What makes Walled Ahmedabad a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Bhadra Fort is the focal point of the Walled City of Ahmedabad, essentially the oldest part of the city founded—like the fort—by Ahmad Shah I in 1411. Explore the area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see historic gates, tombs, temples, and traditional densely packed houses called pols with characteristic bird feeders and wells.
