POINT OF INTEREST

Biblioteca Burano

Via San Mauro 107, Burano, Italy, 30100

Burano’s public library is a pocket-sized oasis for readers of all ages, with five rooms holding more than 10,000 books divided into sections for kids, teens, and adults, plus daily newspapers and a Wi-Fi connection. In addition, Biblioteca Burano holds regular cultural programs and events to promote literacy and literature for Italian speakers.

The basics

Take a break from sightseeing and relax with a book or newspaper at the Biblioteca Burano, the island’s small but well-stocked public library. Adults and teens can browse books and newspapers, while families with kids can head to the children’s section. Pair a visit here with a Venetian islands tour by vaporetto (water bus) or a private water taxi tour to visit Burano’s colorful homes, San Martino Church, Lace Museum, and lace shops and seafood restaurants around the main Piazza Baldassare Galuppi.

Things to know before you go

  • The collection at the Biblioteca Burano is in Italian, with just a few books in English and other languages.

  • Anyone can visit the library, but you must be a resident to check out books or other materials.

  • The children’s area has play spaces, toys, and Italian-language books.

  • The library is completely accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Biblioteca Burano is on the island of Burano, northeast of central Venice in the Venetian Lagoon. Hop on vaporetto number 12 at the Fondamente Nove stop to reach Burano in about 50 minutes, or hire a private water taxi to reach the island in about 30 minutes.

When to get there

The library is open Mondays and Wednesdays in the morning and afternoon, with a 1-hour closing for lunch. The rest of the week, the library is open in the morning except for Sundays, when it is closed to the public. Duck into Biblioteca Burano on a rainy day for a quiet break.

Family-friendly attractions on Burano

Kids love a trip to the traffic-free island of Burano, with its calm canals lined by cartoon-colored houses and crossed by tiny footbridges. In addition to the town center itself, and the library, the island offers a handful of great attractions for families, including a small but fully equipped playground and the bustling main Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, where children can explore safely without any traffic (or canals to fall into).
