Big Banyan Tree

Moon Hill Scenic Area, Yangshuo, Guanxi, 541999

One of the main attractions along Yangshuo’s scenic “Ten Mile Gallery,” this large, ancient tree is said to be over 1,400 years old. At 56 feet (17 meters) tall and with a trunk 23 feet (7 meters) around, this massive tree covers an area of nearly 11,000 square feet (1,000 square meters).

The Basics

Situated on the west bank of the Jinbao River, south of Yangshuo, Big Banyan Tree is an impressive towering tree, with twisted roots, gnarled branches, lush green leaves, and a dense canopy. Also known as the “Love Tree” from its role in a well-known Chinese movie, Big Banyan Tree is popular with Chinese tourists, especially young couples. It makes for a nice stop on the way to Moon Hill from Yangshuo, or after a rafting trip down the Yulong River.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There is a fee to enter Big Banyan Tree park.

  • The tree itself is fenced off, and you cannot stand directly under it.

  • There is a small river nearby, and you can pay an additional fee to take a bamboo raft across and back.

  • There are many vendors around the tree selling souvenirs; you can pay a fee to dress up in various costumes and have your photo taken.

How to Get There

Big Banyan Tree is located about 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) south of Yangshuo. It is within the newly created Yulong River Park, which restricts motorized traffic. Those entering other than on foot or bike will have to exit their transport and purchase tickets for a shuttle bus that runs within the park.

When to Get There

Big Banyan Tree is very popular with Chinese tourists. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds; also avoid visiting during the May and October national holidays.

Scene from Chinese Movie “Third Sister Liu (Liusanjie)”

Big Banyan Tree was featured in the 1960’s movie “Third Sister Liu (Liusanjie).” In the movie, the heroine declares her love for the hero by tossing a silk ball to him beneath the banyan tree. Many Chinese tourists, especially young couples, like to re-enact this scene under the banyan tree, and you can purchase similar silk balls from vendors at Big Banyan Tree.
