Big Rock Falls
Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Douglas da Silva, Cayo District
Set amid the pine-covered and boulder-strewn slopes of Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, this 150-foot (46-meter curtain of roaring white water is one of many picturesque waterfalls that dot this wooded wilderness area. Hidden behind the forest foliage, the falls attract bathers who come to swim in the pool at its base.
The basics
While it is possible to visit the falls on foot from nearby lodges within the forest, most visitors come as part of organized day tours from nearby San Ignacio. At the falls you can refresh yourself with a dip in the pool at the base or simply lounge at the edge, listening to the crash of the plummeting cascade.
Tours typically combine a visit to Big Rock Falls with other beauty spots within the reserve, such as the nearby Rio On Pools—a series of granite rocks through which the river flows over small cascades and pools. Many day tours also make a stop at nearby Caracol, an ancient jungle-surrounded Maya city near the Guatemalan border.
Things to know before you go
- Bring your own water and snacks as there is nowhere to purchase them nearby.
- The falls are reached via a steep set of wooden steps, making them unsuitable for visitors with limited mobility.
- The rocks around the falls can be slippery so be careful with your footing.
- If you’re driving, note that parts of the access roads are unpaved and bumpy, and are best navigated in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle.
How to get there
Big Falls Rock is situated within Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize’s Cayo District. From San Ignacio, take the Chiquibul Road exit off the Western Highway and follow signs for Gaïa Riverlodge. At the lodge you’ll see signs pointing toward the falls. From the parking spot it’s a steep descent on foot to the falls.
When to get there
Go on a hot day, when the cool water will feel especially refreshing. If you visit between June and November you can expect more rain and extra drama with a heavier flow of water. December through May is typically drier; despite attracting more crowds during these months, the falls are rarely overcrowded.
