Bioparque Los Ocarros

Located in Villavicencio, Bioparque Los Ocarros is a nature reserve dedicated to protecting the flora and fauna of the Orinoquia region of Colombia. Spanning 14.3 acres (5.8 hectares), the biopark is home to more than 190 species and 1,900 specimens of mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish, many of which were rescued.
The Basics
Walk along the many nature trails in the biopark, surrounded by the native flora of Orinoquia. Get a closer look at the wildlife of the region as you take in more than 30 exhibits, including the serpentarium and aquarium located on artificial islands within the natural lake in the park. Or engage in recreational activities, such as aquatic bicycles, on the lake. The biopark also offers special talks and folk shows from time to time.

How to Get There
The biopark is located about 3.7 miles (six kilometers) northeast of Villavicencio, which is about an hour and a half from Bogotá by bus. For ease, book a guided tour with roundtrip transportation. From Villavicencio, taking a taxi is an option for those not driving. Otherwise, take the camperos that go towards Restrepo or the colectivos that go towards Cumaral.
When to Get There
The biopark is open daily, with slightly extended hours on weekends and holidays. Folk shows are held on certain weekends and holidays. In summer when it's very hot and humid, it’s best to go first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon.
Wildlife in the Biopark
The biopark was named after the ocarro, or giant armadillo, which is in danger of extinction. In addition to the ocarro, numerous other animals call the biopark home, including anacondas, otters, pumas, jaguars, crocodiles, caimans, turtles, anteaters, marmosets, spectacled bears, palmero bears, howler monkeys, and tiger butterflies.
