Bloody Point along the western coast of St. Kitts is named after a tragic historical event there in 1626, when French and British colonies were being developed on the island, each claiming land as their own. As they expanded, the original native Carib Indians, led by Chief Tegremare, attacked the colonizers. But since the two nations had learned of his plan beforehand, they banded together, killing over 2,000 natives.
The Basics
As the legend goes, blood from the massacre ran down the river here for three days. While many visitors treat the site as a drive-by attraction, it’s best explored on foot. From the village of Challengers, follow the river through Stone Fort Canyon, where some 100 petroglyphs have been carved on rocks by the Caribs. From here, venture to the headland for a view of neighboring islands, St. Eustatius and Saba. The hike takes about an hour; it’s recommended to take it with a guide who can make sure you find the trailhead, filling you in on the history along the way.

How to Get There
Bloody Point is located along Old Road on the west coast of St. Kitts, , about 4 miles (6 kilometers) north of Basseterre. Expect roughly 12 minutes on the road. Drive, take a taxi or go as part of a tour to the point.
When to Get There
The historic place is open year-round. Peak season runs from December to April, during which time the biggest event of the year, National Carnivalxa0 (also known as Sugar Mas), ignites the island in the run up to Christmas and New Year. For a more quiet time, visit between May and July when crowds dwindle and temperatures are hot and humid.

From here move up the coast to one of the Caribbean’s only UNESCO World Heritage sites, thexa018th-century Brimstone Hill Fortress. Set atop a steep volcanic hill overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the fort is a wonder of engineering, being one of the earliest examples of “Polygonal System” fortress design. Wander the grounds and spot troupes of green vervet monkeys that live and roam about the national park.
