Bohinj Valley
Bohinj
Surrounded by emerald rivers, cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and the towering peaks of the Julian Alps, the Bohinj Valley is one of Slovenia’s most popular adventure travel destinations. Lake Bohinj, the valley’s main attraction, is a massive glacial lake inside Triglav National Park, and offers plenty of hiking, mountain biking, swimming, rock climbing, and boating activities.
The basics
Most visitors arrive in the Bohinj Valley as part of a day trip from Lake Bled or Ljubljana. Choose between hiking and mountain biking adventures, or take a sightseeing tour that stops at Bled area attractions such as the Bled Castle and Bled Island church, along with Lake Bohinj. During the winter months, the Bohinj Valley is a favorite destination for downhill and cross-country skiers, ice climbers, and snowshoers.
Things to know before you go

How to get there
The Bohinj Valley is located 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of Bled in northwestern Slovenia. The easiest way to get to Bohinj is by driving or taking a guided tour from Bled or Ljubljana. Bus service is available from Lake Bled or Ljubljana with a transfer in Bled. The nearest international airport is in Ljubljana.
When to get there
The Bohinj Valley draws fewer visitors than nearby Lake Bled, making it an excellent destination any time of year. The best months for hiking and water sports are from June through October, and the best time for winter sports is typically January through March. If you’re traveling to the Bohinj Valley during the busy summer months, be sure to leave early in the morning to avoid traffic in and around Lake Bled.
Climbing Triglav from the Bohinj Valley
Many hikers use the Bohinj Valley as a base camp for climbing to the top of Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak. This 9,395-foot (2,865-meter) peak is often climbed in 2 days from the Pokljuka Plateau above Lake Bohinj, one of the quickest and easiest ways to the summit. Hikers can stay at a mountain hut at the base of the mountain, and tackle the summit either with a guide or on their own.
