Bois Cheri Plantation

Bois Cheri Road, Mauritius

The Bois Cheri Plantation has been producing tea in southern Mauritius since 1892. Spread out over around 617 acres (250 hectares), the plantation comprises fields, a production facility, and a museum where visitors can learn about tea from the source.

The basics

The best way to experience Bois Cheri is on a guided tour of the tea factory and museum. You'll learn about the lifecycle of tea, from plant to cup, and sample some for yourself. A range of tour options is available, from private tours focusing solely on Bois Cheri to full-day tours of the island that stop at other attractions, including Blue Bay Marine Park and the St. Aubin house, an estate with a rum distillery.

Things to know before you go

  • Bois Cheri is a must-visit for fans of tea and anyone interested in agriculture.

  • Parts of the plantation may be difficult for wheelchair users to navigate; check with your tour operator about accessibility concerns before your visit.

  • Meals are available at the plantation's restaurant, Domaine Bois Chéri, and are included in some tour packages.

How to get there

The tea estate is in southern Mauritius, less than an hour's drive from Port Louis. The easiest way to get there is by joining a tour with transportation. If you’d rather drive yourself, take the M1/M2 south to the A9 (via the Nouvelle France Link Road) until you reach La Flora, a few minutes’ drive from the plantation.

When to get there

Bois Cheri is open Monday–Saturday throughout the year, with reduced Saturday hours. If you’re visiting Mauritius on a major holiday, it’s best to call ahead to ensure the plantation isn't closed. Expect pleasant weather from May until around the middle of October, when temperatures and rainfall increase.

St. Aubin House

Although tea takes center stage in Mauritius, it's not the island’s only major crop. Sugar production has long been an important industry in the country. You can learn more about the industry's history—and sample some rum—at St. Aubin House. This 19th-century estate features historic colonial architecture, a restaurant serving island cuisine, and an artisanal distillery where you can see how rum is made for yourself.
