Boka Waterfall
Bovec, Slovenia
Hailed as the mightiest waterfall in Slovenia, Boka Waterfall courses 347 feet (106 meters) down a vertical cliff face near the Soça River. The water hits the rocks below so powerfully that it constantly deepens the natural pool. From the Bovec-Žaga road above, a path leads to a panoramic viewpoint of the cascade.
The basics
Many road-trippers stop to admire the Boka Waterfall while driving along the scenic Bovec-Žaga road. To reach the viewpoint, it’s just a 15-minute walk. Avid hikers can challenge themselves to the 9-mile (15-kilometer) Narnia hiking trail, a circular route that starts from the town of Bovec and passes river and mountain scenery. Some tours of the Soça Valley—a popular place for kayaking and white-water rafting—also stop at Boka Waterfall.
Things to know before you go
- There’s no entrance fee to admire the Boka Waterfall.
- Sturdy shoes are a must to complete the route leading to the waterfall, as there are steep ascents and loose gravel.
- While the route to the waterfall isn’t wheelchair accessible, you can still enjoy partial views of the waterfall from the roadside.
How to get there
From the center of Bovec town, Boka Waterfall is 4 miles (6.5 kilometers). You can reach it by car using the Bovec-Žaga road. This part of Slovenia doesn’t have much public transportation, so you’ll need to drive there or visit as part of a tour.
When to get there
The best time to visit Boka Waterfall is in the spring and fall, when the snow from the mountains above melts and creates the most powerful flow. The water in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall is a bracing 40°F (4°C), even in the summer, so it’s not recommended to swim there.
An exceptional dining experience in Bovec
Tucked away in the forested town of Bovec is an unlikely culinary sensation. Hiša Franko has received many top accolades—being awarded three Michelin stars—and made waves on the Netflix show Chef’s Table. You can savor a tasting menu prepared with the freshest ingredients, many of which are foraged from the forest. Be sure to book this popular spot well in advance.
