Bonaire National Marine Park

The Basics

Bonaire’s National Marine Park, which encircles most of the island, is well-known for its conservation of marine resources. Explore on a snorkel tour, and spot tropical fish and marine mammals among the brightly-colored coral. Some tours include a sailing trip around the island, others include visits to Bonaire highlights—such as the hilltop Seru Largu lookout point, Gotomeer lagoon (home to a large population of flamingos), and the salt flats—in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Things to Know Before You Go

• All visitors to the marine park are required to purchase an admission ticket to contribute to maintenance and conservation.

• Bonaire National Marine Park is an ideal place for scuba diving, however all divers, regardless of experience, must undergo an orientation course for diving.

• Be sure to take plenty of water and sunscreen on boat trips; the Caribbean sun is very strong.

How to Get There

Bonair, a Dutch colony, can be reached via direct flights from Amsterdam and the US. The best way to explore the marine park is by boat tour.

When to Get There

Bonaire’s tropical climate and absences of hurricanes means that the island is a year-round destination. For the fewest crowds and best hotel rates, visit outside of the peak tourist season, which runs from May through October.

Klein Bonaire

Just off the western shore of Bonaire, tucked into the crook of the main island’s natural crescent shape, sits the islet of Klein Bonaire. This uninhabited, low-lying island only rises six feet (1.8 meters) out of the water, but it boasts a handful of ruins dating from the colonial era and an often deserted beach called No Name Beach, both of which make the island an interesting day trip.
