A pocket of wilderness in the Margaret River region of Western Australia, next to the coast, the Boranup Karri Forest is part of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. It’s known for its karri trees and draws visitors for its bushwalks and photo ops of the densely packed trees and other foliage.
The basics
The main event of the forest is simply driving through, stopping for photos, picnics, hikes, and to take in views from the Boranup Lookout. You might also spot kangaroos, birds, and other wildlife, as well as wildflowers in the spring. Some tours from Margaret River and multiday trips from Perth include the forest. It is possible to visit on a long day trip from Perth, with a drive of more than three hours each way.

- Boranup Drive, which winds through the forest, is an unsealed road but is suitable for most vehicles.
- A small campground is located in the forest.
How to get there
If you’re coming from Margaret River, drive about 12 miles (20 kilometers) south to Boranup Drive and turn right; this road takes you through the forest and meets back up with Caves Road 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) later.
When to get there
The road through the forest is open at all hours. The Margaret River region can be very crowded on weekends and during the state’s school holiday periods (typically January, April, July, and October). Wintertime means fewer crowds but chances of wet weather.
Karri Trees
Part of the eucalyptus genus, karri trees are the tallest trees in Western Australia, typically growing up to 200 feet (60 meters) tall. They are known for their pale bark and are native to this southwest region of the state, where it rains more than other areas.
