Borrowdale Valley is a highlight of any trip to Cumbria’s Lake District. With grass-covered peaks, oak-filled woodlands, and rolling pastures along the River Derwent, the natural beauty of the valley is undeniable, and its location at the heart of the Lake District makes it a prime destination for hikers.
The basics
The landscape of Borrowdale was sculpted thousands of years ago by ancient glaciers. Later it became a hub of activity during the Industrial Revolution, home to ironworks and copper and graphite mines. Now peaceful once again, the scenic valley is linked by the Honistor Path to Buttermere Valley in the West and Derwent Water and Keswick in the north, and lies en route to the famous peak of Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.
The region is a playground for hikers and rock climbers—getting to the top of Scafell Pike is a must-do challenge for outdoor enthusiasts. If you prefer to explore in a more leisurely fashion, you can still enjoy the dramatic scenery by taking part in a guided tour. You’ll find several charming country villages in the valley, like Grange and Rosthwaite, for a pleasant stop.

How to get there
Borrowdale Valley is located in the north of England in the Lake District National Park, just east of Buttermere, and Keswick town is a great base for exploring the area. As an alternative to driving, take one of the buses that leave from the town, to see the highlights of the area, or join a guided tour.
When to get there
The Lake District region has a temperate climate with frequent rainfall. Summer from June to August is generally the most pleasant time to visit, with warm days. Spring and autumn can be pleasant, though changeable, while winter is generally cold with rain or snow.
The Bowder Stone
A famous feature of the Lake District for hundreds of years, this 2,000-ton (1,800-tonne) stone, which measures roughly 30 feet (9 meters) high and 50 feet (15 meters) across, teeters in a state of precarious balance. It’s thought that the rock toppled into its present position over 10,000 years ago, when the glacier that once almost filled Borrowdale began to retreat.
