Bosphorus

Istanbul, Turkey

The Bosphorus Strait defines Istanbul. Running through the heart of the world’s only city that spans two continents, the mighty waterway is the dividing line between Europe and Asia, connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Dotted with parks and elaborate Ottoman mansions, including Dolmabahce Palace (Dolmabahce Sarayi) and Topkapi Palace (Topkapi Sarayi), and spanned by three intercontinental bridges, a Bosphorus cruise is a must for any visit to Turkey’s largest city.

The basics

As a major shipping and trade lane, the Bosphorus Strait has attracted empires for centuries. Look closely and you’ll notice their remains are visible along the coastline. Ottoman empire summer houses, the Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya), historical imperial gardens, and more are visible from the water. The Bosphorus draws people to its shores, and many take boats out on the water.

Many small-group and private tours of the city include a cruise on the channel, giving passengers views of both sides of Istanbul. These boat rides typically include visits or views of Dolmabahce Palace, Anadolu Kavagi, Rumeli Fortress, Topkapi Palace, and more. Things to know before you go

  • The Bosphorus is a must-visit for history buffs and all first-time visitors to the city of Istanbul, the ideal way to see the sites along the European and Asian shores.

  • There are city-run public cruises as well as more intimate private cruises available. Some include lunch or dinner on board.

  • In the summer, it’s popular to rent a boat for dining on the Strait.

  • Swimming in the Bosphorus is not safe or recommended; the water can be quite choppy, and there are strong currents.

How to get there

The Bosphorus Strait bisects the city, offering views of both the European side and the Asian side, and there are many departure points for boat cruises. Popular ones are at Eminonu, Kabatas, Kadikoy, and Bebek, all of which are easily accessible by bus or taxi. Make sure to check where your departure point is before you set sail.

When to get there

Boat tours in Istanbul on the Bosphorus are most popular during the warm summer months, though they run all year long. Often cruises set out in the afternoon or evening, depending on which option you choose. It’s good to arrive at least 15 minutes before your boat’s scheduled departure time if you want to get a good seat.

Mansions on the Bosphorus

Ottoman-era mansions, many of which served as summer homes, palaces, or embassies, line the shores of the Bosphorus. Kucuksu Palace is as ornate as Dolmabahce Palace, as is Ciragan Palace, which is currently a high-end hotel. The Kibrislilar Mansion, near Uskudar, is the widest on the waterway, while Sadullah Pasha Yali is one of the older wooden Bosphorus mansions.

Ways to explore

Boat cruises, ferries, and yacht charters ply the Bosphorus Strait, affording plenty of ways to admire Istanbul from the water. Hop aboard for a short sightseeing cruise or a romantic dinner cruise, ride the ferry over to explore the Kadıköy and Üsküdar neighborhoods on the Asian side, or venture further afield to the Princes Islands.

As you cruise along the Bosphorus and Golden Horn, you can spot attractions such as Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), Topkapi Palace, and the Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi). Pass under the Bosphorus Bridge and enjoy a prime view of waterfront landmarks, including Dolmabahce Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, and the Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisari).

Accessibility

Wheelchair accessible boat cruises and ferries are available, but it’s recommended to contact the tour operator in advance to check for specific accommodations.

Age limits

Many boats welcome children on board and are stroller accessible.

What to pack

Reusable water bottle, camera, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, cash (for on-board tipping)

What to wear

Weather-appropriate clothing and a sweater or jacket—the coastal winds mean it can be cooler on deck than on land.

Not allowed

Swimming in the Bosphorus isn’t recommended, due to strong currents

Amenities

Many boats and ferries have onboard restrooms and a café or bar.

Address

The Bosphorus Strait bisects the city, and there are many departure points for boat cruises and ferries on both the European side and the Asian side. Popular departure points are at Eminonu, Kabatas, Kadikoy, and Bebek—all of which are easily accessible by public transport or taxi. Make sure to check exactly where your departure point is on a map, as it can be confusing.

Driving

Istanbul’s traffic is chaotic to say the least! There are plenty of taxis and rideshare services available, so it’s best to leave navigation to the professionals.

Public transportation

Trams 1 and 5 both pass through Eminonu, with stops on both sides of the Golden Horn. The F1 railway will take you from Taksim Square directly to Kabatas Pier.

Best times to visit

Sailing between Europe and Asia is impressive at any time of the day, but sunset cruises arguably afford the most magical views. Choose a tour that spans day to night to admire the evening illuminations. Seats often aren’t allocated, so arrive early to secure a good spot.

Best days to visit

Midweek cruises are usually far less crowded than those from Thursday through Monday, and it’s best to avoid holiday weekends when both locals and travelers will be setting sail. However, if you’re taking the public ferry during the week, try to avoid peak commuter times: 7am to 9:30am, and 5pm to 8pm.

Best months to visit

Bosphorus cruises run all year-round. A winter trip can be less busy, but the best season for a cruise is spring (March to May), when you’ll have a strong chance of warm weather, calm waters, and manageable crowds.

Special events

Special dinner or party cruises are often organized in celebration of Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or Ramadan. The Bosphorus also provides a spectacular backdrop for annual sporting events such as the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim (July), the Bosphorus Cup (September), and the Istanbul Marathon (November).
