POINT OF INTEREST

Bowen Falls

Milford Sound Highway, Southland, New Zealand, 9679

At 531 feet (162 meters), Bowen Falls is the highest in Milford Sound and a must-see attraction. There’s a constant flow of water here, whatever the weather, unlike some of the fjord’s rain-dependent temporary waterfalls. While you can’t currently walk here, you can see Bowen Falls on a Milford Sound boat ride or on scenic flights over Fiordland National Park.

The basics

If you’re a confident driver, you can self-drive to Milford Sound and there are many beautiful attractions to see along the way. Alternatively join a guided tour from Queenstown or Te Anau, so you can admire the views rather than watch the road. However you reach Milford Sound, a cruise is a must-do activity. Another option is scenic flights, which allow you to see parts of the national park that you can’t otherwise access, including Bowen Falls. Kayaking tours are also available.

Things to know before you go

  • While completing the walking track to Bowen Falls is a good experience when it’s open, some visitors say the view from the water is better anyway.

  • While you get a very close-up experience of Bowen Falls from some cruises, be aware that getting wet is all part of the fun.

  • Bring insect repellent, sun protection, and rain gear, as weather conditions can be unpredictable.

How to get there

Travelers typically self-drive or join a guided tour to Milford Sound from Te Anau or Queenstown, and hop on a cruise to see Bowen Falls and other natural attractions and views. When the walking track is open, it can be accessed via a short ferry from the Freshwater Basin Terminal—it’s a 30-minute walk and ideal for families.

When to get there

Milford Sound is a year-round destination and is especially popular in summer. Expect rain at any time of year, but don’t let wet weather put you off: Bowen Falls and other waterfalls can be even more impressive during or after rain. Snow and ice on the road to Milford Sound can make winter travel more challenging, but not impossible as long as you’re prepared.

What you’ll see on a Milford Sound Cruise

Aside from Bowen Falls, there are other beautiful sights to spot on a Milford Sound cruise. These include the perfectly pointy Mitre Peak, a forest-covered mountain that rises from the water; Stirling Falls, the other permanent waterfall in the fjord; and wildlife including penguins, dolphins, and seals.
