Bridge of 15 Bridges

Reguliersgracht 1, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1017 CD

Sometimes referred to as the “Venice of the North”, Amsterdam is well known for its picturesque canals, romantic bridges, and narrow houses. The city boasts well over 1,200 bridges, and one of the most visited is known as the Bridge of 15 Bridges. While the claim that you can see 15 bridges while standing here is an urban legend (the actual number is somewhere between seven and 13), the bridge is still a popular, photogenic spot worth visiting.

The Basics

The best way to experience the Bridge of 15 Bridges is by boat—canal cruises are always an essential Amsterdam experience, and many travelers claim that a boat’s-eye view gives you the best chance of seeing as many bridges in a row as possible. Most guided boat tours also include stops at other Amsterdam attractions and include expert commentary about the city’s famous waterways. You can also visit the bridge on your own—just be sure to postpone your stroll until after sunset, as the bridges and canals look most beautiful when they’re lit up at night

Things to Know Before You Go

  • You’ll have to walk around the bridge and look at the views from a variety of angles (or take a canal boat along the water) to see all of the bridges.

  • This bridge is considered one of the most romantic spots in Amsterdam and is popular with couples.

  • Visit in the early morning or early evening for the best photo opportunities.

How to Get There

The Bridge of 15 Bridges is found at the intersection of Reguliersgracht and Herengracht. To get there, take tram 4, 9, or 14 to Rembrandtplein and then walk to Thorbeckeplein, which will lead you to the bridge on Reguliersgracht. The 15 Bridges view is only a 5-minute walk from Rembrandtplein.

When to Get There

While the Bridge of 15 Bridges is a great spot to visit at any time of the day, the views are particularly impressive and romantic when the edges of the bridges are illuminated at night. This is a popular spot, so expect crowds in the evenings. Consider booking an evening canal cruise to see the illuminated bridges from the water.

The Seven Bridges of Reguliersgracht

For another great view of the canal bridges, continue south on Reguliersgracht to the Seven Bridges of Reguliersgracht. This is the point where Reguliersgracht crosses the Keizersgracht, and it is a popular spot for photographers, who come to try to capture images of the arched bridges all lined up over the tranquil water. Like the Bridge of 15 Bridges, Seven Bridges is especially beautiful at night, when the edges of the bridges are illuminated.
