British Residency Lucknow

Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Qaisar Bagh, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, 226001

Lucknow’s British Residency is an enduring reminder of British colonial presence in India and a must-visit attraction in the city. British officials and their families sheltered here during the 5-month Siege of Lucknow in 1857. Now, visitors can learn about this history in the museum and by strolling the ruins and the grounds.

The basics

Built in the late-18th century as a home for British officials of the British Raj, the complex reflects a combination of European and Indo-Islamic architectural styles. Travelers interested in architecture and history will want to spend some time here. The lush gardens also provide a welcome break from Lucknow's busy, traffic-clogged streets. You can visit independently, but it’s a central fixture on many Lucknow city tours.

Things to know before you go

  • There are different entry fees for Indians, visitors from SAARC countries, and foreign visitors from elsewhere. Kids under the age of 15 are free.

  • The British Residency sometimes hosts cultural events, special exhibits, and performances showcasing local art and culture.

  • Don’t miss the ruins of St. Mary’s Church and its cemetery within the Residency complex—around 2,000 people killed during the Siege of Lucknow were buried here.

How to get there

The British Residency is in central Lucknow, on the southern banks of the Gomti River. Unless you’re on a city tour, the best way of getting to the complex is by taxi or autorickshaw. Both can be hailed from the street. Make sure to agree on a fee before you set out—if you’re unsure how much to pay, ask your hotel for a rough idea or for them to find a driver.

When to get there

The complex is open every day from 7am until 6pm. When the weather is hot (anytime between March and October), try to visit early in the day to avoid the sun, as much of the complex is outdoors.

Visit Lucknow’s historic sites

Before the Siege of Lucknow in 1857, Lucknow was one of India's grandest and wealthiest cities. Although tourists often bypass the capital of Uttar Pradesh, many wonderful historic buildings remain that give you an idea of Lucknow’s opulent past. Don’t miss the scalloped Rumi Darwaza gate and the Shia Islamic shrines, the Chota Imambara and Bara Imambara.
