POINT OF INTEREST

Broadway Alley

Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Full of art, music, street performances, and food stalls, Broadway Alley is a lively pedestrian street in the heart of Tashkent. The lane connects two of the city’s main squares, Amir Temur Square and Mustakillik (Independence) Square, which are both top historic attractions. Come during the day, or at night, when little white lights twinkle above the street.

The basics

Broadway Alley is right between two major squares and monuments, so it makes a perfect way to walk between the two. If you go there as part of a tour, your guide can help you to barter for artworks, antiques, or Soviet memorabilia for sale. Later, come back on your own to take your time browsing, watching acrobats and musical performers, or challenging an opponent to a game of street table tennis. Grab some plov, the national rice, carrot, and mutton dish, or an ice cream before you leave.

Things to know before you go

  • Broadway Alley is also called Sayilgokh Street.

  • There’s also a movie theater and shopping mall off Broadway Alley if you want to spend time indoors.

  • US dollars are accepted in certain places, but Uzbek sum is more widely accepted.

How to get there

Tashkent has a decent public transportation system—the metro is cheap and gets you where you need to be in the city. There are also taxis all over the place, so you can easily hail one. Consider hiring a driver while you’re in Tashkent, as a way to save time and have more flexibility.

When to get there

If you’re there around September 1, or Independence Day, you’ll find a festive atmosphere and tons of decorations. In general, Tashkent is bitingly cold in the winter and can be boiling in the summer, so aim for spring and fall for the most temperate weather. Broadway Alley is outside, and pleasant weather will make visiting it much more enjoyable.

Samarkand

If you have time, don’t miss a chance to visit Samarkand. The train trip takes just about 2.5 hours, and then you’re transported back in time. Pretend you’re traveling the Silk Road and find this oasis with beautiful mosques, colorfully tiled madrasas, and some of the most ornate tombs and mausoleums in the world. Stay for a night to get the full experience.
