POINT OF INTEREST

Cala Dragunara

Alghero, Sardinia

Cala Dragunara, a pocket-sized cove on the northwestern corner of Sardinia, is one of the most famous beaches in Capo Caccia. Lined by lush Mediterranean vegetation, the cove can be accessed either via a stone staircase by land or directly by sea. Bask on fine golden sand, take a dip in the crystalline water, and hike along the path south to visit the 16th-century watchtower.

The basics

Set on the very tip of Capo Caccia in the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park, Cala Dragunara is a popular stop for boat tours from Alghero and driving tours of the Coral Riviera (Riviera del Corallo). Explore Alghero’s old town with a walking tour, then set off to spend an afternoon relaxing, swimming, and snorkeling in this pristine protected cove. Hiking enthusiasts can also join a guided excursion along the coastal trails to take in the views and spot landmarks, like the Torre del Bol watchtower.

Things to know before you go

  • The water at Cala Draguna is shallow and sheltered from the wind, so relatively calm and suitable for families.
  • Snorkelers can explore the protected waters of the surrounding Capo Caccia Marine Reserve, rich in colorful fish and sea life.
  • The beachside snack bar serves drinks and food, and there is a rental stand for sunbeds and umbrellas.
  • The beach sits at the bottom of a large flight of steps, so is not accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

  • Cala Dragunara is located just north of Alghero inside the Porto Conte Regional Park. Driving from Alghero to the cove takes around 30 minutes and there is a small parking area just above the beach. Alternatively, take the local ARST bus line 9321 towards Capo Caccia, which stops a short walk from Cala Dragunara.

When to get there

This popular beach gets crowded during the midday hours from June to September, so show up early in the morning to claim your spot. Alternatively, come for a late-afternoon swim after the crowds have left. This east-facing beach is in the shade by late afternoon.

Visiting Neptune’s Grotto (Grotto di Nettuno)

Ferries run regularly between the tiny dock at Cala Dragunara and the nearby Neptune’s Grotto, one of the most striking sights on Capo Caccia. This mile-long (2.5-kilometer) network of natural caverns can be explored with a 30-minute guided walking tour along its paved route, during which you’ll see crystalline underwater lakes, long tunnels and galleries, and massive stalagmites and stalactites. Reach the cave by 654 steps from the parking area above or directly by sea via the ferry from Alghero and Cala Dragunara.
