Calchaqui Valleys

Cafayate, Argentina

Stretching across northwest Argentina in the province of Salta and beyond, the Calchaqui Valleys are known for their dramatic canyon landscapes. The top draws are the red rock formations of Quebrada de las Conchas or the wineries of Cafayate. It’s also a very popular destination for hiking and photography.

The basics

Swirling formations of red rocks with steep walls make for a dramatic backdrop throughout the winding mountain roads. Plan at least 2-3 days in the area to learn about the local wine scene and visit landmarks such as Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat) and Quebrada de las Conchas (Shell’s Ravine). Tours from Cafayate and Salta tend to cover all of the major valley landmarks and take care of navigating the difficult desert roads.

Things to know before you go

  • Outdoor adventure enthusiasts will find plenty of options here, including hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking.

  • Nature lovers, especially those with an interest in cacti, are drawn to this part of Argentina.

  • In this desert climate, be sure to bring sun protection including a hat and ample sunscreen.

  • Hiking trails at some of the landmarks are not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The most-visited part of the Calchaqui Valleys is the area between Cafayate and Salta. Many visitors arrive at the airport in Salta and continue either by rental car or guided tour. Some public transport is available (buses depart from Salta regularly and take around four hours), but travel by car or tour is much more convenient for stopping to see the sights along the way.

When to get there

Visitors explore the Calchaqui Valleys throughout the year. Some people are interested in visiting the wine region during the harvest season of late February through early April. Summer (December-February) is the hottest time of the year and often brings heavy rain.

Where to sample wine in Cafayate

Beyond red rocks, wine draws visitors to this part of northwest Argentina. A wine museum in Cafayate is a good place to begin your education of local wines, and several wineries are open for tours, tastings, meals, and more. Consider joining a wine tour, which provides transport between wineries, and be sure to sample Torrontes, a beloved local dry white wine.
