Cao Son Market
D. Hoàng Quoc Viet, Cam Son, Cam Pha, Quang Ninh
The Cao Son Market, held on Wednesdays, is a great place to shop for Vietnamese handicrafts. Even if you aren’t in the market for souvenirs, it’s worth visiting the market to learn about some of the communities that live in the mountainous northern parts of the country while sampling tasty regional specialties.
The basics
Hmong, Nung, Dzao Khao, and Han community members come to the Cao Son Market to shop and sell crafts, produce, and food, making it a popular stop on Lao Cai tours. While you can visit independently, going with a guide can be helpful if you want to interact with people, particularly if you don’t speak Vietnamese. Full-day tours from Sapa and multi-day tours of the entire area are options and generally include boat rides on the nearby Chay River.
Things to know before you go
Always ask permission before taking people’s photos.
Vietnam has a bargaining culture, so it’s OK to haggle a bit if you want to buy something.
As the market is outdoors, wearing sun protection is a good idea.
How to get there
Cao Son Market is located in the Muong Khuong district of Northern Vietnam's Lao Cai province, about a 90-minute drive from Lao Cai. The best way to visit is by heading out on a tour that includes transportation and the services of a local guide who can help you break down language barriers and learn about the people you interact with.
When to get there
The market is open on Wednesdays. The best time to visit is early morning when temperatures are cool, and the market is most active, but you'll find plenty to see no matter when you decide to visit.
Dong Xuan Market
If you don't have time to make it to Cao Son Market, you can still get a feel for market life at Hanoi's Dong Xuan Market. This massive indoor market is a great place to pick up everything from clothes to produce. Though it's geared toward locals, you can find some interesting souvenirs.
