POINT OF INTEREST

Cap Taillat

Cap Taillat, St-Tropez, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 83350

One of the Saint-Tropez region’s most tucked-away corners, Cap Taillat is a sandy promontory that extends into the Mediterranean, a short trip south of the town center. Boasting unspoiled beaches and scenic hiking trails, it’s a protected wildlife area that’s reachable by foot or by boat, but is largely inaccessible to vehicles.

The basics

Though it’s not far from the see-and-be-seen glitz and well-heeled crowds of Saint-Tropez proper, Cap Taillat feels a world away. Comparatively empty of crowds and resorts, the peninsula offers an escape into the region’s pristine seafront landscapes, as well as a destination for active travelers looking to stretch their legs. Plage Taillat and Plage Ranc are two public beaches at the north end of the peninsula—both relatively accessible to visit. Meanwhile, those hiking further south will be rewarded with immaculate views overlooking the coast and water beyond. It’s also possible to admire Cap Taillat from the water’s edge aboard a boat tour.

Things to know before you go

  • Owing to its lack of paved trails and sometimes rough terrain, Cap Taillat has limited access for disabled or less mobile visitors.

  • If you’re planning a hike, look to travel light, but be sure to bring sunscreen, hats, and durable shoes to manage uneven surfaces.

  • As it is relatively remote, Cap Taillat doesn’t maintain regular lifeguards along its entire waterfront, which means swimming will be done at your own risk.

  • The area is a nature reserve; follow “leave no trace” principles and remove all your trash and belongings before departing.

How to get there

Cap Taillat is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) south of Saint-Tropez. It can be reached by a roughly 20-minute drive or taxi ride along the D93; paid street parking in the surrounding residential area fills up quickly. Once on the cape, it is only possible to explore by foot (though those traveling by boat can also access its coves and inlets).

When to get there

Cap Taillat is lovely throughout the year but is particularly popular during the summer months (especially August, when many French people spend a month along the coast). Though Cap Taillat is always less crowded than neighboring resort areas like Saint-Tropez, those looking for an especially calm time to explore should visit in September, when the water is still warm but the crowds have thinned.

The best beaches near Saint-Tropez

For rugged Mediterranean scenery and unspoiled views, it’s hard to beat Cap Taillat. But the region around Saint-Tropez offers a wealth of beaches to explore, each of which promises its own experience. Among them are the Plage de Pampelonne (one of Saint-Tropez’s best-known beaches), the slightly tucked-away Plage de la Moutte, the local-favorite Plage de Salins, the Plage de l’Escalet (near Cap Taillat), and many more.
