Capilla del Hombre (Guayasamín Museum)

Mariano Calvache E18-95, Quito, Ecuador, 170401

The brainchild of Oswaldo Guayasamín, Ecuador’s most renowned and beloved artist, the Chapel of Man is a museum dedicated to chronicling the history of mankind through the artist’s most powerful works. Inspired by an Inca temple, Guayasamín designed this massive hilltop monument as a tribute to Latin America’s native populations, showing the history of human suffering and violence.

The Basics

Most visitors to Chapel of Manxa0(Capilla del Hombre) purchase entry to the museum that includes the adjacent Guayasamín Museum, which is the former home of the artist and holds an enormous amount of his paintings alongside his enormous personal collection of pre-Columbian and colonial artifacts and religious art. Guided tours are offered for free, and are highly recommended to offer a comprehensive understanding of Guayasamín’s art and his place in art history. From the elevated terrace, admire an outstanding view of the city.

How to Get There

Chapel of Man (Capilla del Hombre) is located on Mariano Calvache in the Bellavista neighborhood in northern Quito, right next to the Guayasamín Museum. For your personal security, it is best to take a taxi that will leave you at the entrance. The closest bus stop is Lorenzo Chavez y N32, which is about a one-minute walk away—which is not advisable in the dark.

When to Get There

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from morning until evening. Come early or before closing hours to avoid the crowds. Peak season in Quito runs from June to September, coinciding with the Ecuadorian dry season. Throughout the year, the high-altitude climate is springlike with chilly nights. To experience the city in festival mode, visit from February to April for Carnival and religious holiday Semana Santa.

Eternal Flame and Tree of Life

As you enter Chapel of Man, a gentle flame springs from the center of a solid red circle. Meant to evoke peace and hope, the Eternal Flame is dedicated to those who lost their lives defending human rights. In the courtyard, look for the Tree of Life where Guayasamín and his dear friend, Ecuadorian poet Jorge Enrique Adum, are buried side-by-side under a tree the artist planted himself.
