Carlsberg Brewery
Valby Langgade 1, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1799
Find out how Carlsberg became one of the biggest names in beer worldwide with a trip to the place where it all started. The brewery was first opened on this site in the 1840s, and visitors can see some of the original beer-making equipment, learn how the drink is made, and enjoy a craft beer tasting.
The basics
Beer enthusiasts enjoy exploring the site of the Carlsberg brewery started in 1847 by JC Jacobsen and named after his son, Carl. You can see the individual ingredients that go into beer, learn about the country’s beer-making history, and view the huge collection of more than 20,000 (unopened) beer bottles from around the world.
The self-guided tour concludes with a beer tasting (soft drinks are available). Visitors can also see some of Jacobsen’s sculpture collection in the gardens and visit the horses that are kept on-site. The brewery is included in a multi-attraction Copenhagen discount card and is a stop on hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses.
Things to know before you go
- Entry to the attraction is by paid ticket.
- There is a shop on-site selling different beer and merchandise.
- A café and restaurant are on-site, too.
- See the smaller version of The Little Mermaid statue in the brewery courtyard.

Climb the Round Tower
Built in the 17th century to house the city’s observatory and university library, the Round Tower (Rundetaarn) is an interesting stop on any Copenhagen visit. Climb the spiral ramp winding up more than 115 feet (35 meters) to the viewing platform at the top of the tower, look at the sky and stars through a telescope, and marvel at the building’s construction, centered around a hollow core that runs all the way through the building.
