Caroni Swamp
Trinidad, Trinidad
Just south of Port of Spain on the balmy west coast of Trinidad sits one of the island's top spots for birders: the Caroni Swamp. This protected mangrove—the second-largest in the country—is characterized by a labyrinth of channels and lagoons that provide a safe sanctuary for around 100 types of migratory birds.
The basics
You can see the swamp and its avian species by heading out on a guided boat or kayak tour with a guide on hand to help you spot birds. You may even spot the country's national bird—the scarlet ibis—along with other creatures, including silky anteaters. Many such tours also include transportation from capital city hotels. Full-day tours, including a stop at the Asa Wright Nature Centre, another bird-lovers hotspot, are also available.
Things to know before you go
The Caroni Swamp is a must-visit for birdwatchers and kayaking enthusiasts.
Most boat tours are unsuitable for most wheelchair users.
It’s a good idea to douse yourself in sunscreen and bug spray before visiting the swamp
How to get there
The entrance to the swamp is located along the Uriah Butler Highway, just south of Port of Spain. It's a quick taxi ride away, usually taking only around 15 minutes without traffic to get to the offices of boat tour operators. Most tour packages to the park include transfers from Port of Spain hotels and back again, meaning you won't need to sort out your own transportation if you pre-book a tour.
When to get there
The best time of day to visit the Caroni Swamp is at dusk, when colorful ibises begin to roost. This is the time you're most likely to see the scarlet-hued birds fly in unison, and it's generally a good time for photos, but it's also when mosquitos are out in full force. Plan your trip to coincide with Trinidad’s dry season, which runs from January through the end of May.
Visiting the Asa Wright Nature Centre
Set in the island's Arima and Arepo Valleys, the Asa Wright Center is another excellent spot for amateur ornithologists. This rainforest retreat provides a haven for hundreds of birds, from hummingbirds to tufted coquettes, which you can view on a guided walk through the jungle. There’s even an onsite lodge for those who wish to stay the night.
