Situated across two popular Italian provinces—Tuscany and Emilia Romagna—the Casentinesi Forest National Park comprises forests, villages, peaks, and even ancient monasteries. From the protected stretches of Sasso Fratino to the towns of Premilcuore and Portico di Romagna, this forest park is easy to explore on both foot and horseback, as well as by bike and boat.

Whatever your outdoor interests, there’s something for most in the Casentinesi Forest National Park, from mushroom picking to canoeing. Follow trails to waterfalls such as Acquacheta from San Benedetto in Alpe; marvel over panoramic views from the peak of Monte Penna or Monte Falterona; or admire historical finds at the so-called “Lake of the Idols.”
Architecture and history buffs are covered too, by sites including the Camaldoli Monastery and La Verna Sanctuary. While independent exploration is possible, visit in the company of a local guide to get the most out of your visit.

Electric boats run on the park’s lake from March to September each year, and canoeing on the lake is also an option.
The Casentinesi Forest National Park is not entirely wheelchair accessible, thanks to uneven trails and slopes.

When to Get There
To take advantage of the park’s seasonal offerings and best weather, visit between March and September when electric boats run on the lake and conditions are ideal for hiking, biking, and canoeing. However, keep in mind that this is peak season and visit midweek for a quieter experience. Autumn is also a splendid time to visit, although the park is accessible year-round.
Mushroom Picking
For the cost of a license, you can enjoy a spot of mushroom picking in the Casentinesi Forest National Park. Look out for porcini, prugnoli, marzuoli, and more, depending on the season, and consider mushroom foraging with a local guide who can point you in the right direction. Just keep in mind that you cannot pick mushrooms without a license, as this is a protected area.
