Castel del Monte

Strada Statale 170, Andria, Barletta-Andria-Trani, 76123

The imposing 13th-century Castel del Monte’s octagonal ramparts and towers are so iconic that an image of the UNESCO-listed fortress graces one-cent coins issued in Italy. Explore one of the most impressive of the many castles built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in southern Italy and Sicily during his influential reign.

The basics

Sitting on a remote hillock overlooking the surrounding undulating plains, Castel del Monte is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval architecture, taking its influences from both classical and Islamic building styles.

To best appreciate its unique history and design, visit with a guide on a day trip from Bari or Ostuni, or join a single or multi-day tour of Puglia’s highlights to see the fortress along with sights like the trulli in Alberobello, Bari’s historic center, the pretty village of Trani, and the Sassi di Matera in neighboring Basilicata. Some itineraries include lunch and wine tastings, so gourmands can enjoy Puglia’s excellent food and wine.

Things to know before you go

  • The castle is not accessible to wheelchair users, and there are long flights of steep stairs to access the upper floors and towers.
  • Tours of the castle require a bit of walking over uneven pavement, so choose comfortable shoes.
  • Older kids especially enjoy visiting this intact medieval castle.
  • With its singular design, the castle is an especially interesting stop for architecture fans.

How to get there

Castel del Monte is located near Andria in the Alta Murgia National Park just west of Bari. There is no bus or train to the castle, so the best way to visit is with a guided tour that includes transportation.

When to get there

Puglia can get uncomfortably hot at midday in summer, so visit the castle in early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of the heat and for the best light to photograph the views from the castle.

Federico II’s Architectural Masterpiece

When Castel del Monte was built, Federico II’s realm stretched across southern Italy and Sicily. The exact use of the castle is still debated, but its architecture is considered among the empire’s most remarkable. Perfectly octagonal, it is constructed around a courtyard with a series of octagonal towers. Internally, it rises two stories with eight rooms on each, and although the furnishings and much decoration are gone, the marble moldings around the great entrance remain.
