Occupying the Castle of Linz in the city's Old Town, the Castle Museum contains a wealth of information about the history and cultural treasures of Upper Austria. Here you'll find a mix of permanent exhibits and special exhibitions on topics ranging from natural history to fine art.
The basics
Fixtures at the Castle Museum include an exhibit dedicated to Austrian art from the 12th–18th centuries, a massive coin display, an exhibit on technical history in Upper Austria, and a particularly unusual display of cribs from nativity scenes, to name a few. One of Linz's most popular attractions, the museum is included on a number of tours of the city, including walking tours and shore excursions.

How to get there
The Castle Museum is located on the western side of the Hauptplatz (Linz's main square) in the heart of the city center. Tram lines 1, 2, and 3 all stop nearby and connect the museum with other parts of town, including the main Linz train station, less than 10 minutes away.
When to get there
The Castle Museum Linz is open Tuesday–Sunday, including on most public holidays, and is closed on Mondays. Special events also take place throughout the year, so check the museum’s website. Linz itself is at its finest in the summertime, when the weather is pleasant but rarely too hot, though Christmas markets in the city can make for a fun wintertime visit, too.
Visiting the Ars Electronica Center
For a leap ahead in time, it's worth checking out the Ars Electronica Center, another one of Linz’s main draws. This futuristic museum, about a 10-minute walk from the Castle Museum, focuses on new media and technology, with loads of tech-fueled interactive displays on topics ranging from neuroscience to the universe around us.
