Catedral Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe

Av. Paraná, 5440, Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, 85860-290

Famous for its fluted roof and ultra-modern architecture, Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe is one of Foz do Iguacu’s most prominent attractions. Dedicated to the Virgin of Guadeloupe, the patron saint of Latin America, the religious building is a marvel to behold and offers panoramic views from its hilltop perch at the city’s highest point.

The basics

Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe is a must-see if you’ve got some spare time in Foz do Iguacu after visiting the magnificent Iguazu Falls, named one the 7 Wonders of the Natural World. It’s a regular feature of Iguacu city tours, which typically combine it with the brilliant white Mosque of Omar Ibn Al-Khattab and the Three Borders Landmark (Marco das Tres Fronteiras), which marks the intersection of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Things to know before you go

  • The cathedral is a functioning place of worship, so keep your voice to a minimum and wear respectful clothing.

  • Take plenty of insect repellant, as bugs are an issue nationwide.

  • Parking is available beside the cathedral.

How to get there

From the city center of Foz de Iguacu, the Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe is a 10-minute drive via Av. Juscelino Kubitscheck. Public transport in Foz de Iguacu is limited, so you’re best to take a rideshare service or join a tour that includes transportation.

When to get there

Visiting hours for the cathedral are typically from 2pm until 5:30pm on Mondays, while from Tuesday through Friday it’s open from morning to afternoon with a break around lunchtime: usually from 8am to 11:30am, then 2pm to 5:30pm. On Sunday, it’s open for the morning only. If you want to attend a Mass service, these tend to take place at 7:30pm Monday through Saturday, with extra services on Wednesday and Sunday.

Other religious buildings in Foz do Iguacu

Because of its location at the intersection of three borders, Foz do Iguacu serves as a symbol of cultural diversity. Nowhere showcases this better than the Mosque of Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, with its blinding minarets and dome, and the Buddhist temple, where more than 120 statues back an enormous Buddha.
