Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul
Petrov 9, Brno, Czech Republic, 60200
The site of the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul has welcomed religious groups since the 11th century, though it wasn’t until the end of the 13th century that this chapel was reconstructed into a basilica. The cathedral continues to host services and parish events, but is also open to the public to respectfully explore on guided and self-guided tours.
The basics
The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is a delight for visitors who appreciate architectural evolution. From the 13th century through the early 1900s, this cathedral was structurally altered, thus reflecting many different design styles. A small museum is on-site, along with a tower you can ascend, and a treasury room. One unique feature of this cathedral, along with its guided tours, is that it’s a venue for more than church services: Scope out its calendar to attend events like concerts held during the summer, Christmas, and New Year’s.
Things to know before you go
The cathedral is free, but the tower and jewel room have admission fees.
Operating hours for the tower, jewel room, and crypt change biannually.
The cathedral’s bells are rung at 11am, rather than the traditional 12pm; the time was changed in the 17th century, in response to the Swedish siege.
How to get there
The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is on the outer edge of Brno’s historic center at Petrov 9. It is 0.6 miles (1km) from Brno’s main train station and within walking distance of the Old Town Hall, the Moravian Museum, and Spilberk Castle. The Šilingrovo náměstí and Nové sady tram stops are on either side of the cathedral.
When to get there
If you hope to join a guided tour of the cathedral, check ahead of your visit, as tours aren’t available during concerts, funerals, weddings, and church services. Whether or not you take a tour, arrive in the late morning or afternoon when the crypt, tower, and jewel room are all open for visitors.
See more 13th century history at Spilberk Castle
The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is one of many 13th-century structures found in Brno. Spilberk Castle, within walking distance of the cathedral, is another popular tourist attraction. Like the cathedral, the castle offers quite the view and more things to do than just tour its grounds. Movie screenings, exhibits, and live events take place in and around the castle grounds.
