Cathedral of St. Peter (Trier Cathedral)
Domfreihof 2, Trier, Germany, 54290
With its rich tapestry of Romanesque, medieval, and baroque architectural styles, the Cathedral of St. Peter is one of Trier’s most memorable landmarks. But it’s not only an architectural wonder. Germany’s oldest church—the original walls were constructed as early as AD 340—is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a renowned collection of sacred art.
The basics
Visitors are welcome to explore the cathedral's interiors and exteriors, and you can admire the cloister, peek inside the crypt, see the treasury, and visit the chapel where the cathedral’s prized relic is on display—the Holy Robe (the Tunic of Christ). You can also join a tour to see the underground excavations of an ancient prayer room beneath the cathedral. While many sightseeing and walking tours of Trier include a stop at the Cathedral of St. Peter, only official cathedral tour guides are allowed inside.
Things to know before you go
The Cathedral of St. Peter is still a working church, and visits are not possible during Mass.
There is no admission fee.
Parts of the cathedral are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, but the Holy Robe Chapel and the treasury are accessed via steps.
How to get there
If you’re in downtown Trier, it’s just a 2-minute walk to the cathedral from the central Hauptmarkt. Buses also stop along Mustorstasse, a couple of blocks south.
When to get there
The cathedral is open daily year-round from early morning to early evening. Mass is held twice each morning, and there’s also an evening Mass on Sundays; visits aren’t possible during service times, so check the schedule in advance or arrive between 11am and 4pm.
Trier’s other UNESCO-listed monuments
Along with the Cathedral of St. Peter, the adjoining Church of Our Lady is one of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, notable for its French Gothic style—the earliest church of its kind to be built outside of France. Also on the UNESCO list is a collection of impressively preserved Roman ruins that provide insight into Trier’s ancient history. A walking tour of the Roman monuments includes the imposing Porta Nigra gate, the 22,000-seat amphitheater, the Roman baths, and the Aula Palatina basilica.
