César Tower (Tour César)
Rue de la Pie, Provins, Île-de-France, 77160
If the UNESCO-listed Provins is known as one of France’s most emblematic medieval towns, then the Cesar Tower (Tour César) is its literal and figurative high point. Dating back to the 12th century and built by the Counts of Champagne, the multi-turreted stone tower was used as a dungeon and watchtower before becoming a symbol of the town.
The basics
Provins has earned a reputation as one of France’s foremost medieval cities, thanks to its well-preserved ramparts and fortifications, its historical and cultural fairs, and its network of underground tunnels—but the Cesar Tower (Tour César) may well be its most recognizable attraction. Also known locally as “La Grosse Tour” (“The Big Tower”), it was built between 1152 and 1181, and is ringed by defensive walls.
Today, the Cesar Tower is a popular destination for Provins visitors, who ascend its spiral staircase to the top for panoramic views over the town. Its well-maintained governor’s suite is another point of interest, offering a glimpse of what medieval life was like in this once-bustling hub.
Things to know before you go
It’s recommended to book tickets at least 24 hours in advance, whether online or at the local tourism office.
Owing to its historical architecture and spiral staircase, the tower is not accessible to disabled visitors and is not recommended for those with claustrophobia.
The Cesar Tower is included in the cost-saving Pass Provins, which entitles visitors entry to five of the town’s top historical attractions.
For one night each in July and August, the tower is lit by more than 700 candles after dark as part of the “Provins by Night” event; check dates in advance.
How to get there
The Cesar Tower is on the Rue de la Pie in central Provins, a 5-minute taxi ride or a 20-minute walk from the Provins train station. Provins itself is east of Paris and within day-trip distance; direct trains run between the two via the Gare de l’Est (the trip is roughly 1.5 hours each way). Provins can also be reached by car via the N4.
When to get there
The Cesar Tower is generally open daily, with relatively brief opening hours during the week and more extended hours on weekends (its schedule is subject to change throughout the year). The most popular time to visit is during the summer high season, particularly during the Provins Medieval Festival in June, so be sure to book in advance during those times.
Provins highlights
After exploring the Cesar Tower, set off to discover Provins’ other historic landmarks. You can walk its fortification walls, visit medieval sights like the Tithe Barn and the Saint-Ayoul Priory, explore the Underground Galleries (Souterrains), and attend the town’s medieval cultural fairs in the summer (when events like jousting are held).
