POINT OF INTEREST

Cesme Castle

Musalla, 1015. Sk., Çeşme/İzmir, Turkey, 35930

Built in the early 16th century, this formidable hilltop fortress is Cesme’s most recognizable attraction. Its vantage point once allowed the Ottomans to watch the seas for signs of pirate ships or enemy invasions; today, it means that the castle boasts incredible bird’s-eye views stretching along the Aegean coastline. The building also houses the small but worthwhile Cesme Museum.

The basics

Located in the center of town, the castle is a must-see on any Cesme itinerary. The star attraction may be the view, an unobstructed seaside vista overlooking the marina, all the way to Chios and beyond. The on-site museum takes an hour or more to visit, with exhibits spanning thousands of years, from Bronze Age archaeological finds excavated from the region to displays on the Ottoman army’s impressive naval fleet and Russian-Ottoman battles at sea.

Things to know before you go

  • Tickets cover entry to the castle grounds and museum. Cesme Museum is also included in the MuseumPass E-Card for the Aegean region, which covers over 40 archaeological sites and museums and is valid for a week.

  • Bring your camera, or have your smartphone on hand, as photography opportunities abound. The panoramic view is especially popular.

  • Consider visiting as part of a guided tour of Cesme (some options also include nearby Alacati); while the museum contains signage in English, it’s helpful to have a guide who can unpack the region’s history.

How to get there

From the town square, you can walk uphill to the castle in 10–15 minutes. If you’re driving from Izmir, take the 0-32 highway and follow signs for Cesme; you can also take a taxi or bus, or join a tour that includes transportation. You can even travel from Greece by ferry in 30 minutes, with regular crossings between the ports of Chios and Cesme.

When to get there

Cesme is famous for its beaches, so come in the summer if you’re looking to combine sightseeing with sunbathing. Late May/early June and September are ideal times to enjoy the weather while avoiding the largest crowds. If you’re coming then, visit Cesme Castle in the morning or late afternoon, and avoid walking under the midday sun. Otherwise, if you’re more interested in archaeological ruins, then aim for spring or fall.

Where to find Cesme’s best beaches

This stretch of Aegean coastline is known for its crystal-clear waters and powder-soft sand. But beaches vary considerably, even within a short distance. Centrally located Altinkum Beach is full of amenities like beach clubs, sunbeds, and restaurants, giving it a livelier vibe. Further afield, Pirlanta Beach offers shallow water, which is great for families, while Ayayorgi Bay is known for its bright blue water and evening DJ sets. Some beaches are shielded from winds, while others are better suited for windsurfers.
