Changuu Island (Prison Island)
Zanzibar, Tanzania
Off the coast of Zanzibar, Changuu Island offers plenty for history fans and beach lovers alike. Its "Prison Island" moniker comes from a prison that was built there in the late 19th century, though the structure ended up being used as a yellow fever quarantine station instead.
The basics
Today, Changuu Island draws in visitors who want to see the old prison/quarantine complex, as well as those interested in seeing the island's population of Aldabra giant tortoises, which are endemic to the Seychelles. A number of tours go out to the island, and many packages are available that combine a boat trip to Changuu with a walking tour of Stone Town.
Things to know before you go
Changuu Island is a must-visit for history buffs and beachgoers alike.
Bring sun protection, your swimsuit, and your own towel.
Make sure to wear reef-safe sunscreen that won’t pollute the waters around the island or potentially hurt the fish and tortoises that live there.
How to get there
Changuu Island is located off the coast of Zanzibar, which means you'll need to take a 30-minute boat ride to get there. While you can arrange a boat yourself from Stone Town, many visitors prefer the convenience of a tour that includes hotel pickup, guide services, and island admission fees.
When to get there
The best time to visit Changuu Island (and Zanzibar in general) is during the June–September dry season, when there's less chance of rain, though the shoulder months of May and October are often equally pleasant, with fewer crowds. Come later in the day for the warmest temperature and most sunshine, or come first thing in the morning to avoid the masses.
Walking through Stone Town
If you're staying in a different part of Zanzibar, it's well worth combining your trip to Changuu with a tour of Stone Town. This UNESCO World Heritage city is known for its beautiful architecture that blends Swahili, Arabic, Persian, and European influences. Here you can see the former home of Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury (who was born in Zanzibar), visit the 17th-century Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), and check out the stalls at Darajani Market (Marikiti Kuu).
