POINT OF INTEREST

Chiesa dei Francescani (Franciscan Church)

Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige

This historic church has beautiful cloisters with intricate vaulted ceilings, and houses well-preserved Gothic artworks. Behind the choir gallery, a grand Gothic altarpiece was carved by sculptor Hans Klocker in the early 16th century; in the cloister, bell tower, and chapel you’ll find 18th-century paintings and the pièce de résistance, Gothic frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis.

The basics

The church is very close to the center of Bolzano and a must-visit for travelers interested in religious history and Gothic art and architecture. Walk through the courtyard to the main nave—the central hall of the church—to see the frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis, and the wooden altars, prime examples of Gothic artistry. Don’t miss the arched and columned cloisters providing a serene escape in the heart of the city.

Things to know before you go

  • The Franciscan Church is ideal for travelers interested in religious Gothic art and architecture.
  • The church was damaged during World War II and partly rebuilt in more modern styles.
  • As with most religious sites, modest attire is recommended when visiting.
  • The church is usually open to the public daily, but it’s best to check for any special events or religious services that might restrict access.

How to get there

Head to Via dei Francescani on the east side of the Talfer River to reach the church. You can easily walk there from almost anywhere in the city center—from Piazza Walther, it's a 5-minute walk north to Via Dr. Josef Streiter and Via dei Francescani. You can also take bus #15 to the Bozen, Wangergasse stop.

When to get there

The church is open daily year-round; it keeps morning and afternoon opening hours most days of the week, and afternoon hours on Sunday. It’s best to visit in the early afternoon to avoid religious processions and Mass, unless your aim is to attend. Keep in mind that special services and events may draw crowds and close the church to the public.

Bolzano’s must-see Gothic churches

Starting with the Assumption of Our Mary Gothic cathedral in Walther Square, Bolzano’s city center is home to historic churches and monasteries of various religious orders. Nearby, the Dominican Church and the Capuchin Church—along with the Franciscan Church—were each founded by different orders from the 13th century onward. St. George in Weggenstein Church, which lies just a bit farther north than the rest, was founded by the Teutonic Order, a Catholic religious institution.
