POINT OF INTEREST

Chiesa di San Francesco

Alghero, Sardinia

Considered one of the best examples of Gothic-Catalan architecture in Sardinia, Alghero’s Chiesa di San Francesco ranks among the city’s most important historic attractions. The 15th-century church is part of a larger complex, which includes a Franciscan convent, cloister, and bell tower. Admire the highlights, then climb the 64 steps to the top of the tower for pretty views over the city.

The basics

The austere exteriors of the Chiesa di San Francesco hide more ornate Baroque and Rococo interiors, and architecture buffs will be fascinated by the unique blend of styles that span centuries. Most city sightseeing tours include a stop at the church and its surrounding complex, or you can visit independently. It only takes about an hour to cover the complex, so it’s easy to combine a visit with a boat tour along the Coral Riviera coastline to Porto Conte and Capo Caccia.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunblock if visiting the church as part of an Alghero walking tour.
  • Shoulders and knees should be covered when entering this place of worship.
  • Photography is allowed inside, but be respectful of services taking place.
  • The complex is partially accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The Chiesa di San Francesco is in the center of Alghero’s old town, just a short walk from Alghero Cathedral and other local attractions. Visit the church on a city walking tour or independently; it’s around 10 minutes on foot from the ferry port or main Piazzale della Pace parking area.

When to get there

The church and convent are open from Monday to Saturday, while the bell tower is open from Tuesday to Saturday. Visitors are able to enter during weekday services, but be respectful and avoid disturbing worshippers. The cool church interiors offer a welcome break from the summer heat during the midday hours.

Highlights of the Chiesa di San Francesco

The Chiesa di San Francesco is part of a Franciscan monumental complex that includes the church, convent, cloister, and bell tower, which together make up one of the most remarkable examples of late Gothic and Renaissance architecture in Sardinia. Treasures inside the church include the Rococo high altar and the capitals of the columns around the chapels, decorated with carvings of the plants that the Franciscan friars once cultivated in the convent gardens—chicory, artichokes, grape vines, and more.
