Chionji Temple (Hyakumanben Chionji Temple)
103 Tanaka Monzencho, Sakyo, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, 606-8225
Chionji Temple, also known as Hyakumanben Chionji Temple, is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto. Its peaceful halls and landscaped gardens lined with cherry blossom trees offer a tranquil escape from sightseeing. However, the temple really comes to life during its monthly open-air handicrafts markets. Here, you can pick up handmade goods: from artwork to kids’ toys, jewelry, ceramics, and tasty local snacks.
The basics
Chionji Temple draws crowds on the 15th of each month with its lively handicrafts market. It’s best to get there in the morning when the market opens, and head straight to the food stalls, as the good stuff can sell out—such as the freshly-made pastries. There’s no set order to visit the market, as the stalls are randomly arranged, so it’s just take your time and enjoy a shopping experience that offers one-of-a-kind souvenirs aplenty.
Things to know before you go
It’s recommended to bring cash with you as many of the stalls don’t accept card payments. There’s a 7-11 convenience store towards Demachiyanagi Station if you need to withdraw cash.
You need to take your shoes off if visiting the interiors of the temple.
Bartering is not common in Japan as items are usually priced fairly.
Be sure to check the spelling when looking up Chionji Temple on the map, as it’s often mixed up with Chion-in Temple, which is north of Gion.
How to get there
If you’re starting at Kyoto Station, then you can get the 17 or 206 bus to Hyakumanben bus stop, which is only a 1-minute walk away. Alternatively, you can get buses 3, 201, or 203 from Shijo Kawaramachi Station. If traveling by train, you can get the Eiden or Keihan lines to Demachiyanagi Station, which is around a 10-minute walk from the temple.
When to get there
The temple is open each day from the morning until late afternoon, but the mornings tend to be quietest, especially mid-week. The prettiest time to see the gardens is during spring and fall, for the flowers and changing colors of foliage, but these months tend to be busiest too. If you happen to be in Kyoto on the 15th of any month then the handicrafts market is a must.
Best things to buy at Chion-ji Market
One of the best things about the market is that artisans and entrepreneurs have to enter a special lottery system to get a stand, guaranteeing an ever-changing lineup of vendors. Expect an array of handmade treasures, from miniature items such as tiny books and furniture to upcycled kimono fabric purses and cat-themed art. You can also satisfy your taste buds with delectable treats such as milk bread and dorayaki pancakes.
