The basics

The Greek Orthodox convent attached to the Church of St. George, often described as a monastery, is closed to visitors but holds many precious relics. Travelers can, however, enjoy the Roman ruins which form the foundations of the church. The Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox religions have taken turns to control St. George’s Church, which is why, despite being Greek Orthodox, the church holds a grand Coptic moulid, or saint’s day celebration, on St. George’s Day.

How to get there

The Church of St. George sits in the heart of Coptic Cairo, about three miles (five kilometers) south of Tahrir Square. Reach it from Mar Girgis metro (Line 1), a stone’s throw away.

When to get there

The Church of St. George is open from morning until mid-afternoon, with services on Sunday. The Greek Orthodox and Coptic Orthodox churches celebrate St. George on different dates: April 23rd is the time to see celebrations in full swing.

Why Is St. George So Popular?

St. George, a soldier, seems to have been martyred in Roman-era Palestine for refusing to give up his Christian faith around AD 303, although the dragon story much later. The patron saint of countries including Georgia, England, Ethiopia, and Beirut, George’s military story led him to become the patron saint of soldiers, making him particularly popular after the Crusades.
