POINT OF INTEREST

Clyde River National Park

Batemans Bay, New South Wales

Just inland from the coastal town of Batemans Bay, the Clyde River National Park on New South Wales’ South Coast is a relaxed spot for camping, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. The river widens and meanders as it reaches the ocean, providing about 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) of waterfront area within the national park.

The basics

The Clyde River starts in the hills north of the national park, and the park encompasses the swamps, floodplains, salt and river flats that form as the river gets closer to the Tasman Sea. It’s home to some rare and endangered plants and trees, as well as mangroves that provide a home for fish nurseries. Along with being ecologically important, this area is generally a quiet place to enjoy the outdoors, and travelers typically visit independently, often as a side trip from nearby Batemans Bay.

Things to know before you go

There are two small unpowered campsites within the park, both of which are free but subject to a small booking fee. Toilets are available at the campgrounds; picnic tables and barbecue grills are on-site as well. Pets, apart from certified assistance animals, are not allowed in the park; smoking is also prohibited. Bring your own drinking water and gas or fuel stoves. Wood fires are discouraged in the summer.

How to get there

The national park is just a few minutes’ drive northwest of Batemans Bay, and can be reached via the unsealed Rotary Drive, off Kings Highway. You’ll need a 4-wheel-drive to get deep into the park, including to the Beach Campground. As another option, you can bike there.

When to get there

Spring and summer are the best times to visit the national park—you can cool off in the river on a hot day. Batemans Bay is especially popular in the summer, but the Clyde River National Park is less frequently visited, so it offers a quieter alternative to the nearby coastal towns. The park is generally always open, but may close due to extreme weather or fire danger.

Take in the views from Holmes Lookout

Whether you’re visiting the park on a day trip from Batemans Bay or staying overnight, don’t miss a visit to Holmes Lookout. There are great views over the river and the ocean, and it’s a good bird-watching spot. You don’t need a 4-wheel-drive to reach this picnic spot high on a ridgeline, making it a bit more accessible than the park’s campgrounds.
